Despite recent uncertainties following the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decision to postpone its net-zero framework, the momentum behind Green shipping corridors is accelerating. According to the Global Maritime Forum’s latest progress report, the maritime industry launched 25 new zero-emission trade routes in 2025, bringing the global total to 84 active initiatives. The delay in global mandates has catalyzed national action, as stakeholders race to secure first-mover advantages in the zero-carbon maritime economy.

Industry experts warn that many initiatives remain stalled by a feasibility wall, driven by the cost gap between conventional fuels and zero-emission alternatives like green ammonia and methanol. Yet, milestones are being achieved. For the first time, four Green shipping corridors have officially reached the realization stage, meaning actual construction and operation of vessel infrastructure and fuel plants have commenced. With the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) expanding to cover 100% of maritime emissions in 2026, the financial incentive to operationalize these corridors is peaking.

A major trend in the 2025-2026 landscape is the geographic and operational shift of Green shipping corridors. Historically dominated by short-sea routes, over half are now dedicated to complex, deep-sea routes.

  • Emerging Markets: China, India, and Brazil have aggressively entered the space, recognizing zero-emission shipping as strategic economic infrastructure.
  • Deep-Sea Dominance: Deep-sea routes now lead by a 17% margin, highlighting the focus on major global trade arteries.
  • Fuel Diversification: Methanol and Ammonia lead the preferred alternative fuel pathways for these new networks.

As 2026 unfolds, Green shipping corridors remain the most viable testbeds for scalable maritime decarbonization.
