The Southeast Asian maritime logistics landscape is witnessing a massive transformation as CMA CGM and Gemadept officially broke ground on April 17, 2026, to expand the Gemalink container terminal in Cai Mep. This strategic investment reveals why Gemalink Phase 2 is going to double capacity in Vietnam, actively addressing the surging demand for deep-water port infrastructure capable of handling ultra-large container vessels.
Since its launch in 2021, the Gemalink terminal has operated at full utilization, processing roughly 1.7 million TEUs annually. To accommodate sustained regional trade growth, the $227.83 million Phase 2 expansion will elevate the terminal’s total throughput capacity to 3 million TEUs by the fourth quarter of 2027. Key infrastructural enhancements include:
- A 450-meter extension of the existing quay across two development phases.
- An expansion of the container yard footprint from 32 to 44 hectares.
- The addition of five advanced ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, bringing the total fleet to 13 units.
For shipping and logistics experts, the reality that Gemalink Phase 2 is going to double capacity in Vietnam signals a major operational advantage. The terminal remains one of only 19 global facilities capable of berthing 250,000 DWT vessels. By absorbing rising import-export flows along major deep-sea routes, this expansion significantly strengthens CMA CGM’s network coverage and cements Vietnam’s 2050 vision of becoming Southeast Asia’s foremost maritime logistics hub.
